Relocating a family to Dubai: a calm twelve-month plan

June 20269 min readBesharat Advisory

A family move goes well when the big decisions are made in the right order. The order is not obvious from a distance, and getting it wrong costs months. What follows is the sequence we use with families relocating to Dubai.

Months one to three: the shape of the move

Decide the residency route and the timing, and understand what it requires of each family member. Shortlist schools, because school places often set the calendar. Agree the districts that work for the school run, the commute and the kind of life you want.

Months four to six: the commitments

Secure school places. Choose the home, whether to rent first or buy from the outset. Open the banking relationships and set up the health cover. This is the stretch where a single point of contact earns its keep, because every piece depends on another.

A good relocation is boring by the end. That is the point.

Months seven to twelve: arriving well

Move, settle, and resolve the small things that only appear once you live somewhere: licences, memberships, the right doctor, the right school bus. We stay involved through this period because it is where families decide whether a move has worked.

Every family's calendar is different, and we adapt the sequence to yours. But the principle holds: decide the shape first, make the commitments second, and leave the arrival as calm as it can be.
